Airfield Days 2009

A friendly general and sport aviation airfield! Located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York

  Some history about Owasco Airfield.

As the years go by our country continues to loose small general aviation airports to commercial and housing developement at the rate of one or two a month.

Owasco Airfield, formerly known as Newhart Airport, was saved in 2005! Located on one hundred acres of open fields and woodlands, this wonderful old airfield has come alive again as Owasco Airfield.

The old Newhart Airport was constructed in 1968 when the then new county road (Long Hill Road) was constructed. Fill was taken from the airfield location to construct the road. In turn, blasted rock from the road construction was used for the base of the runway.

The airport thrived and was a local hang out for pilots and friends. There were pancake breakfast, steak roast, pilot training, fuel, and several aircraft based at the airport. Then in 1990, the airport was closed and fell into disrepair.

In 2004, after years of neglect, the old Newhart Airport property was subdivided and ready to be sold as housing lots.

Tom Brelsford, a commercial pilot from Connecticut, heard about the property being for sale. In April of 2005, Mr. Brelsford was successful in pruchasing the entire airport property to preserve the old airfield.

After a year and a half of restoration work, repairing the hangar and reclaiming the open fields and runway, some sixteen years after closing, the airport was reborn as Owasco Airfield in the spring of 2006.

The Airfield is now host to the annual Owasco Airfield Days.  A three day event open to the public and all types of aircraft. With camping, food, entertainment, a spot landing challenge, Young Eagles Rally, and more.

In September of 2008, the first annual Antique Tractor Show and BBQ was held at the airfield.
